How to answer interview question “tell me about yourself” should never be seen as something difficult to say. In most cases, this is the first question one should expect from the interviewer, and it quickly gives him/her the opportunity to see how best you’ll match the existing team and how skillful you are.

So, before going for the interview, make sure you’ve prepared well enough so that your response would grab the interviewer’s attention that you are actually the right candidate for the job. Note, when describing or telling him/her a little about yourself, make sure you relate your answer to the position you’re interviewing for. However, below are good things you need to know on how to answer interview question “tell me about yourself”

How to Answer Interview Question "Tell Me About Yourself"

  • One or two sentence description of who you are. Make this brief, I mean two minute summary statement of your personality, skills, experience, and work history; and little effort should be put to make sure they all relate to the job you’re interviewing for.

Sample: During my 10 years of experience as a Project Manager, I have learned the ability to influence and motivate others to ensure that project deliverables met all the standards and requirements specified and also within the budget specified for it.

This is where a lot of the job applicants fail, and reason is this, if the way you described yourself is not good enough, the interviewer would have quickly seen that you are not the best fit and believe me, no employer will want to hire someone that is not a good fit for a job.

You need to be natural when responding and make a first good impression that will clearly shows who you are and which will persuade the Company to hire no other person but you.

  • Don’t respond to this type of question with statement about your spouse, hobbies or other extra-curricular activities. Remember that it should be a brief description that should match the goals of the hiring organization. An avenue to talk more about your greatest strength, achievements, and what the hiring Organization would benefit if you are being hired to join their existing team. One more important thing is this, clearly review and study your resume since you want your responses to match with the information supplied. Speak clearly and in such a way that’ll differentiate you from other job applicants.

I hate this question in an interview. I literally would practice in front of a mirror on how to reply. Many, I feel don't like to boast or brag about themselves and its hard to voice your good points. Voted up, marked interesting.

This is the question I found most difficult in an interview and even if I try to prepare myself for the question, my answer doesn't feel natural. I will follow your advices and try to improve, in case I need to apply for another job!

Voted up, useful and interesting

Hi Incomeguru, Good interviewing tips. Also when an interviewer asks about a weakness of the interviewee, the interviewee has to make their weakness to be a strength. Voted up.
