How Does Wikipedia Make Money - Survives Without Advertising

No profit making but still makes money. Recently, I noticed a lot of such criticisms going on and basically about “how does Wikipedia make money and survives without advertising". Of course, Wikipedia is mainly a non-profit organization which I strongly believe putting advertising banner or other form of ads would jeopardize the objective of their contents.

Wikipedia make money and receives much of that by donations and contributions from both the private and public sponsors. Remember it is an online library that’s universally unique in all aspect and where most folks learn and share knowledge on vast number of topics you may think of. So for them to keep the good mission going without hitch, annually they request for donations from their users.

And according to the founder, Jimmy Wales, “when I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different, Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn’t belong here”. Instead they receive donations of the sum of $10, $20, $35 and above as stated on Wikimedia foundation site to keep their services free to the general public.

Actually, surviving without advertising your business is not all that easy to give a try since we all know that without promoting one business, one cannot make enough money to keep the business running. And considering the authority of Wikipedia in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP), they would have generated good amount of revenues from advertisements placed on their site.

How Wikipedia make money without advertising is not supposed to be subjected to public criticism. We need to keep this glaring fact in mind, that, there’s what is called Wikipedia foundation hosting a lot of fundraisers. Being a free encyclopedia, it’s a place for me and you to volunteer to support the good objective of the founder, Jimmy Wales, so that we too can also become one of their numerous other volunteer authors and editors, but before I forget, never expect to be get paid for contributing to the mission of this site neither is it a revenue sharing sites like hubpages, yousaytoo, infobarrel, xomba, shetoldme and squidoo.

Of course, the idea of having an encyclopedia means to be providing every human being on earth with unique and interesting content whenever they’re searching, researching or surfing the web for readily available information or materials on whatever topic they might consider necessary at a particular time.

Now, if you’re one of those folks asking the question “how does Wikipedia make money without advertising” I strongly believe the information above is enough to convince you that, though Wikipedia is a non-profit organization, thus does not make profit but make money and survive by donations from Wikimedia Foundation.

It makes sense that advertising might compromise content of something like wikipedia.

I see nothing wrong with wikimedia utilizing fund raising to keep a not-for-profit site that benefits others operating. I think it's great they say no to advertising. It must have been difficult for them because I'm sure advertisers have approached them with great deals of money. Good job Wikipedia and good job to you too Incomeguru!

In fact, you can donate for Wikipedia for a sum of as little as 1$. I think the success behind the Wikipedia Foundation has much to do with its not-for-profit motto.

The marketing company WikiPro (http://awikipro.com) current promotes on their webpage donating to Wikipedia. The company is a marketing company that specializes in various forms of indirect marketing on Wikipedia, including article creation for high profile clients.

As a former professor I am not suppose to like or even approve of wikipedia - however, it is a wonderful tool and my world is much richer for the added knowledge. I know the knowledge often is missing sources and I take that into account.

awikipro intrigues me - I want to learn more.

I do believe the nonprofits are missing millions of dollars of potential revenue from Google Adsense.

Being a non profit organization alone accounted for millions of dollars from donations. If they opt out, they can't earn as much as that from google adsense.
